Diesel Prices by Region: Weekly Trucking Fuel Costs and Surcharge Calculator
The U.S. average retail price of on-highway diesel was $6.285 a gallon for the week of 14 September 2026, according to the Energy Information Administration. That is up 31.8 cents on the week and up $2.546 on the same week a year earlier. California was the most expensive of EIA's ten regions at $8.039, and the Gulf Coast the cheapest at $6.027.

EIA surveys truck stops and service stations every Monday and publishes a national average, eight regions, two combined regions and California the same day. Every price has taxes included. The three East Coast regions add up to the East Coast figure, and California and the rest of the West Coast add up to the West Coast figure.
Each state on the map takes its region's pump price. Switch to prices before taxes and states in the same region show different prices, because each state sets its own diesel taxes. Point at or tap a state to read its figures.

The U.S. figure is the highest EIA has recorded since the series began on 21 March 1994. Over the last 52 weeks it ranged from $3.459 in the week of 12 January 2026 to $6.285 in the week of 14 September 2026. The gap between the most and least expensive region is $2.012 a gallon this week.

How it adds up
The calculator starts with a base price of $1.25, which is only an example, and 7.28 miles a gallon, the average ATBS reported for its owner-operator clients in 2025. At this week's U.S. average and a 500-mile load, the numbers work out like this:

A surcharge that reads the U.S. average pays the same wherever you fuel. A truck buying in California this week pays $1.754 a gallon more than that average, and one buying in the Gulf Coast pays 25.8 cents less. Diesel price before taxes
EIA's pump prices include tax. The federal diesel tax is $0.244 a gallon: $0.243 excise plus a $0.001 leaking underground storage tank fee. State diesel taxes and fees average $0.368 across the lower 48 states and the District of Columbia in EIA's July 2026 (revised) table, from $0.190 in Arizona to $0.929 in California. Why there is no diesel price for your state
EIA publishes weekly diesel averages for the country, its regions and one state, California. No other state has a weekly series. A page that showed a price for Ohio or Texas would be the region's figure under a state's name, so this site shows the region instead. Each state takes its price from one of these regions:

Alaska and Hawaii belong to EIA's West Coast district, but the diesel survey covers the lower 48 states only, so no weekly price here applies to them.
Method: how each number was obtained
- Weekly prices come from EIA's history tables for the eleven on-highway diesel series, all types, in dollars a gallon, read in full each day so that revisions carry over.
- EIA collects the cash self-serve price, taxes included, as of 8:00 a.m. local time each Monday and publishes it the same day, or on Tuesday after a federal holiday.
- The federal tax and each state's diesel taxes and fees come from the diesel columns of EIA's federal and state motor fuels tax table, which EIA updates each January and July.
- Region membership follows EIA's PADD definitions.
- Changes, averages, highs and lows, gaps between regions, surcharge figures and prices before taxes are our arithmetic on those figures.
A scheduled job reads EIA every day and updates this page only when a figure changes. Pages across the site follow our rating methodology.
What we could not verify
- County and local taxes, and state taxes charged on gross or net receipts. EIA's state table leaves both out, so the price before taxes still includes them where they apply.
- Which price series a given surcharge program reads, and its base price and fuel economy. Those are set contract by contract.
- Pump prices at any one truck stop. A regional average can sit well above or below the price on a particular lane.
Sample, window and limitations
EIA surveys about 590 retail diesel outlets in the lower 48 states and weights the results by volume. The U.S. series starts on 21 March 1994, New England, the Central Atlantic and the Lower Atlantic on 26 May 1997, California on 3 July 1995 and the West Coast outside California on 12 December 2011. EIA changed its survey sample on 13 June 2022 and says prices from that week on are not directly comparable with earlier weeks. The chart covers two years. The surcharge calculator uses that per-mile formula only and does not model a program that pays from a stepped table.
